Alveda King is known for various reasons – being a politician, the niece of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., and an advocate for the pro-life movement.

Many prominent pro-life advocates have interesting backstories which have led them to where they are. Many others just have the common sense of realising abortion is heinous.

As for Alveda King, her journey has been remarkable – having gone from having an abortion to fighting against them.

The pro-life movement is strong!

The life of Alveda King

Alveda King was born in 1951, and is the daughter of A. D. King – who in turn was the younger brother of Martin Luther King Jr.

Having grown up at a time where the civil rights movement was slowly gathering momentum, she had some difficult experiences. This included the death of her father in 1969.

10 years later, Alveda was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives – representing the 28th District as a Democrat.

Alveda ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1984, but was unable to win the seat. She has spoken of supporting the Republican Party too in the past, but she says now she’s “just a Christian”.

Alveda King and early abortion stance

Alveda has spoken candidly about how her mother Naomi King (nee Barber) had wanted to abort her in an effort to continue with her college education.

However, her grandfather convinced Naomi to keep her child, which she did. Eventually, Alveda was born.

Unfortunately, Alveda had two abortions in her younger years. But in 1983, she became a born-again Christian – leading to her changing her views.

This coincided with the birth of a child. Many people understand the horrors of abortion when they finally have a child of their own.

Alveda King the Pro-life advocate

Alveda has since become a strong advocate for the pro-life movement. She has frequently spoken at events about her views.

She has referred to abortion as “womb-lynching”, and correctly pointed out the disproportionate number of black children that are being aborted.

Moreover, Alveda has criticised Planned Parenthood – arguing that they profit from aborting black babies. Planned Parenthood have a very shady history – and were founded by a white supremacist.

Alveda also serves as the director of the Civil Rights for the Unborn organisation. She serves in advisory positions in other pro-life groups too.

Alveda was among those to celebrate when Roe V. Wade was finally overturned in 2022 – following years of pain and hurt.

Furthermore, Alveda is a key member of the well-known Speak for Life organisation – who are a renowned pro-life group.

When speaking to The Federalist in 2022 about her past, Alveda said “I believe everything that happened in my life was leading me to a time when my voice would be part of a message that human life is sacred, from the womb to the tomb into eternity”.

In the same interview, she said that “abortion really does hurt the bodies of the mothers and the babies quite often”, which includes “the spirit, soul and body”. Continuing, Alveda said “so I began to talk about that, and my whole life changed as a result”.

The Takeaway

As Alveda King’s famous uncle once said – “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”. There is surely no bigger injustice than denying someone the right to life.

Alveda King may have made mistakes in the past, but to her credit, she has dedicated many years to the pro-life movement, and will hopefully continue to do so.
